Swat's business of modernizing historic furniture is growing This furniture is not only loved locally but now tourists are also interested in it Beautiful carvings in furniture attract tourists Witnessing a vast variety of cultural intermingling, the centuries-old Swati art of wood carving is still popular in the valley and abroad. Passing down from generation to generation, the art has centuries old history and deep impressions as Buddhists in Uddiyana (ancient name of Swat) were known for their nifty and stylish designs on rock carvings. Samples of that inspirational art can still be seen everywhere in the ruins of 1st to 9th century stone and rock carvings left by Buddhists. During the early Islamic period in Swat valley, wood work in the residential constructions was in abundance. Be it the mere door of a house, hujra, shop or a mosque, people would love to carve out floral design in it. Swati wood carvings and textiles show predictable composition, for the desire to avoid imbalance and haphazardly composed designs puts a premium on symmetrical placement of patterns and rows of patterns. Swati patterns are dense, tightly constructed, breaking up the surface plane as no other Pakistani folk tradition does. Presently, with mixed traces of ancient and modern designs, the wooden furniture has great demand, not only among the local people but also across the country and abroad. Owing to its demand in the market, the art has taken a shape of an industry, supporting large number of people financially. #furnituredesign #historicalplaces #sherinzada

Swat District is a district in the Malakand Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. With a population of 2,309,570 per the 2017 national census, Swat is the 15th-largest district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Swat District is centered on the Valley of Swat, usually referred to simply as Swat, which is a natural geographic region surrounding the Swat River. The valley was a major centre of early Buddhism under the ancient kingdom of Gandhara, and was a major centre of Gandharan Buddhism, with pockets of Buddhism persisting in the valley until the 10th century, after which the area became largely Muslim. Until 1969, Swat was part of the Yusafzai State of Swat, a self-governing princely state that was inherited by Pakistan following its independence from British rule. The region was seized by the Tehrik-i-Taliban in late-2007 until Pakistani control was re-established in mid-2009. The average elevation of Swat is 980 m (3,220 ft)resulting in a considerably cooler and wetter climate compared to the rest of Pakistan. With lush forests, verdant alpine meadows, and snow-capped mountains, Swat is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. The Valley of Swat is delineated by natural geographic boundaries, and is centered on the Swat River, whose headwaters arise in the 18,000-19,000 foot tall Hindu Kush. The valley is enclosed on all sides by mountains, and is intersected by glens and ravines.Above mountains ridges to the west is the valley of the Panjkora River, to the north the Gilgit Valley, and Indus River gorges to the east. To the south, across a series of low mountains, lies the wide Peshawar valley. The northernmost area of Swat district are the high valleys and alpine meadows of Swat Kohistan, a region where numerous glaciers feed the Usho, and Gabral rivers (also known as the Utrar River), which form a confluence at Kalam, and thereafter forms the Swat river - which forms the spine of the Swat Valley and district. Swat then is characterized by thick forests along the narrow gorges of the Kalam Valley until the city of Madyan. From there, the river courses gently for 160 km through the wider Yousufzai Plains of the lower Swat Valley until Chakdara. #swatvalley #kalam #malamjabba

Shahi Bagh With lush green fields, encircled by birch trees and clear water streams running about it the Shahi Bagh valley in Gabral area of Swat is pulling tourists from across the country. Located amid high mountains at a distance of about 15 km from Utror and 32km from Kalam valley, Shahi Bagh offers unique landscape to the visitors. “It left me mesmerised when I entered the valley after traveling two and half hours of hard road journey in the mountains of Gabral. Believe me there is no such spot in Swat than this valley The tourists said the spot was completely different from other resorts in Pakistan as the valley was located at a height of about 10,000 feet amid high mountains surrounding it and clean water streams running around it. “This place is a paradise on earth with calm streams running around it making it a small island where one can enter through a wooden bridge. It is a calm and serene place providing peace and satisfaction, The tourists said the valley was a perfect place for spending nights to enjoy all its colours and beauty. “This is a perfect place for camping because the small valley offers multiple pleasures. Its day time beauty is different and matchless while its mysteriousness in the darkness of night is worth enjoyable. I would send a message to all the natural beauty lovers to visit this place,” said Imram Khan, another visitor. “This place is worth visiting but road leading to it is dangerous and narrow on which only jeeps and four-by-four vehicles can travel. “I am wondering why the government does not develop proper roads to such places,” said Mohammad Masood, a tourist from Peshawar, adding that everyone must visit the place. The tourists, however, stressed that the visitors should not pollute the beautiful spot as they spotted a large number of plastic bags littering the valley. Mohammad Qasim, a resident of Utror, said Shahi Bagh valley remained open for tourists from mid-June till August end or the beginning of September. “From September to June the valley remains covered with snow. The main problem is the bad shape of access road on which only specific vehicles can move #ShahiBaghKalam #swatvalley #imrankhan

Khunjerab Pass (elevation 4,693 metres or 15,397 feet) is a high mountain pass in the Karakoram Mountains in a strategic position on the northern border of Pakistan (Region of Gilgit–Baltistan’s Hunza and Nagar Districts) and on the southwest border of China (the Xinjiang region Its name is derived from two words of the local Wakhi language : 'Khun' means Blood and 'Jerav' means a creek coming from spring water/water falling. The Khunjerab Pass is the highest-paved international border crossing in the world and the highest point on the Karakoram Highway. The roadway across the pass was completed in 1982, and has superseded the unpaved Mintaka and Kilik Passes as the primary passage across the Karakoram Range. The choice of Khunjerab Pass for Karakoram Highway was decided in 1966: China citing the fact that Mintaka would be more susceptible to air strikes recommended the steeper Khunjerab Pass instead On the Pakistani-administered side, the pass is 42 km (26 mi) from the National Park station and checkpoint in Dih, 75 km (47 mi) from the customs and immigration post in Sost, 270 km (170 mi) from Gilgit, and 870 km (540 mi) from Islamabad. On the Chinese side, the pass is the southwest terminus of China National Highway 314 (G314) and is 130 km (81 mi) from Tashkurgan, 420 km (260 mi) from Kashgar and some 1,890 km (1,170 mi) from Urumqi. The Chinese port of entry is located 3.5 km (2.2 mi) along the road from the pass in Tashkurgan County. The long, relatively flat pass is often snow-covered during the winter season and as a consequence is generally closed for heavy vehicles from November 30 to May 1 and for all vehicles from December 30 to April 1. The reconstructed Karakoram Highway passes through Khunjerab Pass. Since June 1, 2006, there has been a daily bus service across the boundary from Gilgit to Kashgar, Xinjiang[4] Road sign giving distances to cities in Pakistan This is one of the international borders where left-hand traffic (Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan) changes to right-hand traffic (China) and vice versa. Highest ATM in the world The Pakistani side features the highest ATM in the world administered by the National Bank of Pakistan and 1LINK. #China–PakistanBorder #HunzaValley #KhunjerabPass

28.05.2020

While travelling from Mingora city to Malakand one can see mountains on the left side of the road along the Swat river, but it might be difficult to say that people realise the history which these mountains have preserved for hundreds of years. Swat is famous for its sites of Gandhara civilisation all over the world. After Alexander the Great, who came to the area in 326 BC, Buddhism emerged as a dominant religion in Swat valley and its centre was based at Odigram village, which is about seven kilometres from Mingora on the GT road towards Peshawar. Odigram also has the historical landmarks of Islam. The oldest mosque of northern Pakistan, which was constructed by ruler Mansoor, nephew of Sultan Mehmood Ghaznavi, in 1048-49 AD, is also situated in Odigram. The mosque, named after Mehmood Ghaznavi, was discovered by Italian archaeological mission in 1985. Mehmood Ghaznavi Mosque is not a tumbledown building, but it reflects the Muslims’ commitments to Islam Local People said that Mehmood Ghaznavi attacked the North West Frontier Province (present Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) through Bajaur Agency, adding that he came to this historical valley during 11th century. “The Sultan divided his forces into two groups to conquer the area,” he said and added that the second group was led by the Sultan himself. He said that they crossed the river and reached this historical place, where headquarters of the last king, Raja Geera, was attacked. Pir Khushaal, locally known as Ghazi Baba, played a vital role in the defeat of Raja Geera, who later fled to Kohistan district, Mr Afraeen said and added that the mosque was later built by ruler Mansoor on the advice of Sultan to promote Islam in the valley. He said that the Sultan passed away 18 years before completion of the mosque, which remained open for prayers for quite some time. Mehmood Ghaznavi Mosque reflects the great victory of Sultan and his forces since its excavation in 1985.The government later also constructed access road to the mosque. “By reaching here one can have a glimpse of history,” says Anwar Khan, a resident of Chitral. He said that he was glad to see a well-constructed access road to this historical mosque. He said that the government should launch a programme for the promotion of historical sites in Swat district. Chitral Visitor Zahoor Ahmad said that the people should also take the responsibility of preserving the historical places by avoiding any act that could cause damage to them.
